Bangladesh certainly falls into
the "one to watch" category for persecuting countries. Recent
elections have placed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party
(BNP) in the seat of power. The BNP is a group with
strong Islamic support and ties to some of the most
extreme Islamic fundamentalists.
Since taking victory in the fall of 2001, there have been
a number of deaths and over a thousand rapes, all
attributed to the BNP itself. Members of religious
minorities claim that they are threatened to pay sub-
stantial fines or their daughters will be taken and raped.
These
incidents are eerily similar to the violent events
that took place during the BNP's last term
of power in
the 90's. Minorities are fearful that the
results could be
even worse this time, with the global
conflict between
Muslims and other faiths on the rise.
