BIO
CSW reached the Armenian people
in Nagorno Karabakh in 1992 when they
were
blockaded, besieged and bombarded in
their
ancient homeland, which was part of
historic
Armenia, cruelly re-designated by Stalin as
an
isolated enclave in Azerbaijan.
Facing a policy of ethnic cleansing, the Armenians
of Karabakh fought to protect themselves
against
impossible odds. The CSW-sponsored Ortho-
pedic Clinic and the Rehabilitation Center
were
established to provide facilities for
amputees and
others suffering from injury and disability
as a
result of this war. Since there was no
provision for
prostheses in Karabakh, CSW has set up
a
rehabilitation center which will provide a
full range
of physiotherapeutic treatments.

The restoration of the building has been complete for a few years and the
center was officially opened
on September 23, 1998. In August of 1998, a
medical delegation from Wyoming, Colorado and the
United Kingdom went to Nagorno Karabakh to
assess the medical needs of the area hospitals. One-
half of a million dollars worth of medical
supplies was shipped in March 1999, and further shipments
have followed for the last several
years.
In
addition to the rehabilitation center, there have been a number of other
opportunities to help the
Karabakhians. One especially successful
program involved the purchase of cows for the people, to
help facilitate the reestablishment of a
livelihood for some, and the providing of basic provisions for
others.
In
May of 2001, CSW joined the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh and visitors
from various countries
on a pilgrimage and various ceremonies
celebrating 1700 years of Christianity in the region.
