Peru was torn apart by an internal armed conflict as two leftist guerilla groups battles government forces throughout the 1980s and 1990s. More than 70,000 people were believed to have been killed or forcibly disappeared. Christians were often targeted by both sides; some were forcibly disappeared or put in prison on trumped up charges. Entire Christian villages suffered horrific massacres. Today, many still seek justice or simply to know the fate of their disappeared loved ones. Christian human rights groups are at the forefront of the struggle for justice and as a result, many have been the recipients of harassment and death threats.
